Henrik Wergeland 200 Years anniversary
Henrik Wergeland was born 17th June 1808 in Christiansand (today Kristiansand), and moved to Eidsvoll when he was nine. His father, Nicolay Wergeland, took part in the National Assembly at Eidsvoll in 1814 (when the Norwegian constitution was written) and Henrik got early a strong connection to the Constitution.
King Carl Johan prohibited the celibration of the national constitution day (17th of May), but Wergeland took sutch an active part in the 17th of May celibration that people thought he was the founder of this day.
Wergeland made his debut as an author in 1829 and he is regarded as one of the greatest poets of Norway. He was very mutch engaged in that times political questions and he discussed matters that even today are high on the international agenda. He was an disputed person and periods of his time was he involved in various lawsuits. Henrik Wergeland died in 1845, at an age of only 38 years.
The Post commemorated Wergeland by issuing a stamp on the 12th April 2008 and Norges Bank honoured Wergeland by issuing two commemorative coins, one silver proof coin of 200 kroner face value and a 10-krone commemorative circulating coin.
We have used the 10-korne coins together with the special stamp on an envelope with a portrait of Wergeland, where he is looking out the window.
This issue has 800 covers which are cancelled on the issuing day of the new stamp, by the special FDC stamp used by the Post only that day.
