Alexei Leonov became the first man to walk in space when he left the Voskhod II capsule 500 km above Earth, an historic act with near fatal consequences for the former air force pilot. After floating in space for more than 10 minutes on the end of a five metre safety line, he experienced extreme difficulty re-entering the airlock because his space suit had inflated in the vacuum of space.

The coin's reverse portrays a cosmonaut outside the orbiting Voskhod II capsule on a coloured representation of the cosmos.
