This coin has been issued by the Belgian Central Bank to commemorate the 100 Anniversary for Roald Amundsens legendary expedition when he and his men were the first persons to reached the South Pole.
Obverse, which has been designed by Ingrid Austild Rise (The Norwegian Mint) has a graphical composition with the portrait of Roald Amundsen to the right and to the left, four of Amundsen's men standing around a tent and the Norwegian flag, surrounded by the text DISCOVERY OF THE SOUTH POLE and the dates 1911 and 2011.
This is first time a Norwegian has been portraited on a gold Euro-coin.
