1 Dollar 2010 - Cook Islands - First Space Shuttle 1981
The grandest of grand finales to one of the most innovative, most fascinating recent collector coin programs, the Perth Mint has now unveiled the last of the Space Orbital Silver Proof Series!
As with its highly sought after predecessors – the Sputnik, First Man in Space, First Space Walk and First Moon Walk coins – this coin is commemorating Columbia, the first Space Shuttle orbiter to circle the Earth. Columbia took off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 12th April 1981, with Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert L. Crippen at the controls. Completing 37 Earth orbits during its 2.074.567 mile flight, Columbia glided back to Earth and landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California on 14th April.
