On 12 April 1961, 27 years-old Cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human in space and the first to orbit the Earth.
As his spaceship Vostok 1, blasted off from Baikonur launch pad in Soviet central Asia, Gagarin shouted "poyekhali!" ("let's go!"). Reaching a height of 302 kilometers, he completed a single orbit of the Earth at 27.000 kph in 108 minutes.
The coin's coloured reverse portrays a maonatge of images symbolising different phases of Yuri Gagarin's historical journey.
