Norwegian Numismatic History: V, The Gimsøy Daler.

Cataloge nr : Nr. 5
Quality : UNC
Year : 2004

The Gimsøy daler is Norway’s most sought after coin, known in only a few copies in private ownership, as well as a small number that are in the care of museums around the world.

The first Norwegian speciedalers (1544-1813) were minted at Gimsøy nunnery in Skien in 1546. Later that same year, the convent burned down and coin production was moved to Copenhagen. It was not until 1628 and the opening of the mint in Christiania that the speciedaler was again minted in Norway.

This pack contains a true replica of the original Gimsøy daler design, modeled by Ingrid Austlid Rise, with the portrait of king Christian III with crown and sceptre on the obverse and Norway’s heraldic lion on its reverse. Clad in patinated silver, this base metal medallion measures 39.0 mm and weighs 26.4 grams. The issue limit is 1,500 pcs.
